Invocation It is a term that is related to the summoning of a special character that can be magically called to help Sora or other characters in the Kingdom Hearts saga. In terms of development, the main goal of the summons was to add characters from Disney movies whose worlds did not appear in the game. They have been present in Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, and Kingdom Hearts II, although the mechanics differ from game to game. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is the first game in the series to not incorporate any type of invocation. In addition to all this, Summons are considered a type of Magic.

Kingdom Hearts

The Fairy Godmother helps Sora unlock the summons

In the first Kingdom Hearts, most summons are obtained by obtaining special stones called "Summoning Stones" in different worlds. Once obtained, the stones have to be taken to the Fairy Godmother, who is in Merlin's house in Paso City, she uses her magic to recover her spirits and release her powers, with which the invocations are activated. The Fairy Godmother explains that the creatures turned into summoning stones lived in a world that was consumed by darkness. However, these beings instead of disappearing along with their worlds, they became a summoning stone instead of disappearing as they had a very strong heart. When invoking, the spirit of these creatures is what helps Sora for a time limit. When the Worlds are restored, those beings also recover.

Two summons, Genie and Tinker Bell, are allies of the worlds Sora has visited in the game, and they join him of their own free will when the lock on their world is sealed. They do not need to be released by the Fairy Godmother before they can be used.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Main article: Summoning Cards

In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories there are summoning cards that Sora obtains during his ascent through Castle Oblivion. Some magic cards allow Sora to perform a certain summoning. These cards are created from Sora's memories, so the summons are the same as in Kingdom Hearts, except for Cloud. Their ways of helping you are also different, since stacking or using a different number of cards brings different results (for example, a single Cloud card performs two sword attacks, while with two cards Cloud makes Cross-Whip and with three creates an Omni-whip). Sora cannot use other cards while summoning.

Kingdom Hearts II

In Kingdom Hearts II, Summons come from special Amulets that are scattered throughout the worlds, allowing Sora to use them immediately without having to unlock them. The Amulets in Kingdom Hearts II work differently than the Summoning Stones in Kingdom Hearts. If most of the summons in the first game gave a temporary body to the spirit that was in the stone, the amulets teleport the character that is summoned from his world to the place where Sora is.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep

Main article: Nexus-D

In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep a new form of invocation appears, known as Dimensional Nexus (abbreviated Nexus-D). Players can gain power from other non-playable characters or wirelessly summon one of the three main characters from other players.

Spring Suspension

Kingdom Hearts

In the Commands menu, the Summon menu in this game is found under the Magic menu. Each invocation requires a specific amount of MP to perform, and this lasts until the MP bar is completely consumed (or until the player ends the invocation manually). In order to summon, the player has to have two allies in battle alongside him, and both of them must be conscious. This means that Sora cannot summon during battles fought alone or when one or both of his allies are unconscious.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

In Chain of Memories, once Sora uses a Summoning Card, the summoned character appears, performs one or more attacks / actions (depending on the number of cards used at once), and then disappears.

Kingdom Hearts II

The Summon menu takes on its own area in the Kingdom Hearts II Commands menu, due to a second menu being included. Additionally, invocations for Kingdom Hearts II no longer require PM, but instead use the countdown fusion gauge. The player again needs two companions in a battle to summon.

Curiosities

  • Bahamut, a character from the Final Fantasy franchise, was originally planned to appear as a summon in the first Kingdom Hearts, but this idea was dropped before the game was released due to the decision of the developer team to use only iconic characters from Disney as invocations. Through special codes, the option to summon Bahamut appears in the command menu and can be selected, but doing so will cause the game to crash.
